When I moved from the UK, to Australia, I brought with me roofing slates that had been stored under our house in Bristol when the roof was re-tiled. Cut in the early 1800s in Wales, these slates had already had several journeys and were something of a talisman, ensuring the safety of our venture. These slates were screen printed with wills and documents relating to the house, geographic symbols, shorthand notes, and the curving lines of particles as they track through the earth.
